Anchorage Garlic

Tallebudgera Valley is best known for its sparkling creek which is framed by the beautiful Burleigh Heads and renowned surfing beaches and National Parks.

It is thought that the name Tallebudgera is derived from an Aboriginal expression describing good fishing. The Valley is a rural and rural residential district within the Gold Coast hinterland holding sort after schools and shopping villages.

Anchorage Garlic - Roberts Choice

Ron McMahon has over 40 years experience in food and agricultural science.

Ron and his family has gone on to grow a large proportion of the organic fruit and vegies available in Australian supermarkets.
Ron worked in factory design and plant breeding, travelling the world and assisting in the development of staple foods. Since “retiring” 12 years ago, Ron and his wife have been running The Fruit Tree Man Nursery at Crystal Creek (outside of Murwillumbah).

One of Ron’s many successes is the garlic that we call Roberts Choice. His cousin Robert Davidson had been growing this variety of Garlic for decades for family and friends. A selection of this garlic was given to Ron’s nursery over 14 years ago and today Robert’s Choice Garlic is grown from West Australia and South Australia to tropical Queensland. Ron has designed this variety to be 100% eatable, it has shown to be resistant to “White rot” and has large corms for quicker easier processing by chefs into their cooking.

Garlic leaves can be harvested, cut thinly Julián style and added into salads, sauces and other dishes.

Garlic Stapes (Flower) can be harvested and used is several dishes raw, roasted or sauteed.
Garlic corms are harvested and dried to be used in numerous ways to compliment cooking dishes.

History of Garlic

The use of garlic as both food and as a remedy goes back into prehistory. For thousands of years and across many cultures garlic is highly regarded for its many culinary uses and significant health benefits. Garlic is found in Ancient Egypt, dating at least as far back as when the Giza pyramids were built and was one of the basic elements of nutrition. Well-preserved garlic cloves were found in the tomb of King Tutankhamen (14th century BC).

Benefits of Garlic

Clinical trials have shown that garlic has important health benefits. The most encouraging results have occurred in the area of cholesterol reduction. The compound responsible for these benefits is allicin.

Imported Garlic facts

Australia continues to import about two thirds of the total garlic required for consumption. A large proportion of this is from China. In China, chemicals banned in Australia are still being used to grow garlic. Australia imports 95% of our garlic from China.
Chinese garlic is gamma irradiated to prevent sprouting and is also sprayed with Maleic Hydrazide to extend shelf life. All imported garlic is fumigated with Methyl Bromide by AQIS on arrival in Australia.
